Designers Notes -
Who doesn’t love a butterfly? Monarch butterflies aren’t actually native to Australia, but they’ve been here since the 1800s and have fully made themselves at home. Depending on where you are, you’ll see them either all year round or mostly through the warmer months. I’m lucky enough to live somewhere where they show up almost constantly.
They’re everywhere in my garden, and you’ll see them drifting through picnics, hanging around the beach, and just moving through life like little flashes of orange. That colour is what makes them so striking, but it’s also a warning. Monarch caterpillars feed on milkweed, which makes them toxic to predators. That bright orange isn’t just beauty; it’s a “don’t eat me, I will mess you up” signal.
There’s something I love about that duality. The most beautiful thing iis also being the one thing that says don’t touch.
When this print came in, it instantly reminded me of a bikini we did years ago with butterfly wings. This feels like my take on that again, but turned all the way up. All orange, all warning signs, all energy.
